J-PAL South Asia has been studying the learning levels of the students in Tamil Nadu with a specific focus on tracking the learning loss and recovery post the Covid-19 induced School closures. As a part of the initial phase of the study, J-PAL South Asia has identified the positive contribution towards learning recovery made by the Government of Tamil Nadu's flagship scheme 'Illam Thedi Kalvi' (ITK).
As per reference 2nd and 3rd cited by J-PAL, South Asia has requested permission to continue the study on the learning levels of the students across the study districts - Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Karur, Trichy and Virudhunagar districts in 2023. The research team has also planned to conduct unannounced visits to the ITK centers across the study sample to observe the proceedings of the classroom and interact with the ITK volunteers to understand the functioning of the ITK centers better. J-PAL South Asia field staffs are permitted to visit ITK centers and to interact with ITK volunteers, in the habitations across the 37 blocks (list of blocks attached) in five districts for research purposes from 16th February 2023 to April 2023.
